Day 1. Arrive in Ulaanbaatar

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and check in hotel. After lunch, visit to the National History Museum and Natural History Museum. Dinner at a local restaurant and return to the hotel (L:D)

~ 2800-3200 km

Day 2. Terelj National Park

 After breakfast, we will drive to the northeast of Ulaanbaatar and reach to the Terelj national Park. We will watch forest and forest steppe birds: Black Stork, Steppe Eagle, Goshawk, Black Vulture, Black-billed or Spotted Capercaillie (very rare), Oriental  Cuckoo, Hoopoe, Great spotted Woodpecker, Black Woodpecker, Great Tits, Willow Tit, Azure winged Magpie. (L, D). Overnight in tent.

Day 3. Terelj-Huh nuur-Baldan Bereeven monastery

Drive to East through Nalaikh and reach to Herlen river. We will reach to small lake “Huh nuur” where Chinggis khan was entitled as a Khaan of Mongols in 1189. Visit to ruins of the Baldan Bereeven khiid monastery. We will see forest steppe, mountain steppe and steppe birds: Saker Falcon, Steppe Eagle, Golden Eagle, Upland Buzzard, Lesser Kestrel, Common Kestrel, Black Vulture, Mongolian Lark, Sky lark, Short toed Lark, Horned Lark, Demoiselle crane. Overnight tent (B, L, D). 

 

Day 4. Hurh-Onon rivers

Drive continue to the east and reach to Hurh and Onon rivers. Onon river is one of the biggest freshwater and mountain rivers. Onon river valley with mixed willow and poplar trees. Birds of steppe, mountain steppe, river  valley, lake and plains: Great-crested Grebe, Black Stork, Swan Goose, Gadwall, European Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Common Pochard, Golden Eye, White-naped crane, Demoiselle crane, Saker Falcon, Steppe Eagle, Golden Eagle, Upland Buzzard, Lesser Kestrel, Common Kestrel, Black Vulture, Mongolian Lark, Sky lark, Short toed Lark, Horned Lark, Greater Whitethroat, Asian Brown Flycatcher … Overnight in the tent (Camp B; camp L; camp D).

 

Day 5. Chingis khaan’s birth place

Drive to east and cross the river and reach to the Dadal sum which is Great Chingis Khaan birth place. Visit to several sites as mineral spring, Chinggis khaan’s monument. Overnight in tent. (B, L, D)

 

Day 6. Birdwatching and horseriding in Chingis birth place

Birdwatching and horseriding to the east along Onon river of Dadal sum and overnight in tent. Birds of forest, forest steppe, mountain steppe, river  valley and bushes: Great-crested Grebe, Black Stork, Swan Goose, Gadwall, European Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Common Pochard, Golden Eye, White-naped crane, Demoiselle crane, Saker Falcon, Steppe Eagle, Golden Eagle, Upland Buzzard, Lesser Kestrel, Common Kestrel, Black Vulture, Daurian Redstart, Siberian Rubythroat, Red-throated Thrush, Common Rose Finch, Meadow Bunting, Yellow-breasted Bunting. Overnight in the tent (Camp B; camp L; camp D).

Day 7. Ulz river

After lunch, we will drive to South and then turn left, along Ulz river valley. Breeding sites of Demoiselle crane, White-naped Crane, Black Stork, Swan Goose, Great Bustard… Overnight in the tent near the river. Overnight in the tent (Camp B; camp L; camp D).

Day 8. Ulz river-Dashbalbar sum

We will continuously drive to the east through sum centers (Dashbalbar sum). Eastern Marsh Harrier, breeding pairs of White-naped crane and Demoiselle cranes with chicks, Hooded cranes, waders, ducks listed in the MOSBWT01, Herring Gulls, Common and White winged Tern,  Barn Swallow (different subspecies), Wagtails, White-cheeked Starling, Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler … Overnight in the tent near steppe lake. (Camp B; camp L; camp D).

Day 9. Ulz river-Haichiin Tsagaan nuur-Huh nuur

We will reach Haichiin Tsagaan Nuur, Huh lake which is the lowest point of Mongolia 560 m (above sea level). We will see Grebes, Ducks, Pochards, Geese, Waders, Gulls listed in the MOSBWT01, breeding pairs of White-naped, Demoiselle, Common cranes with chicks, very rarely Siberian and Japanese Cranes (only few records), Isabelline and Brown Shrikes, Pallas’s Reed Bunting…  Overnight in tents top of hill near Galuut lake.  (Camp B; camp L; camp D).

 

Day 10. Galuut lake –Choibalsan town

Drive from Galuut lake to Choibalsan town. Overnight Choibalsan. Birdwatching around Choibalsan town and Herlen river valley. Internet and fax service. Overnight in tent. Refreshing. (L, D). 

 

Day 11. Choibalsan-Buir lake

After breakfast, drive to east of Choibalsan to reach to Buir lake. Horned Grebe, Little Grebe, Eurasian Bittern, several hundreds of Swan Goose, Bean Goose, Spot-billed Duck, Wigeon, Pintail, Tufted Pochard, White-winged Scoter, Northern Harrier, Pied Harrier, Eastern Marsh Harrier, Waders, Pied Avocet, Red-necked Phalarope, Eurasian Curlew … Overnight in the tent near the lake (Camp B; camp L; camp D).

 

Day 12. Buir lake-Tashgain tavan lakes

Drive to Tashgain Tavan lakes on the way to Choibalsan town. We will see very rare typical high grassland steppe. Overnight in tents (Camp B; camp L; camp D). Priority species will be Reed Parrotbill (very rare). Birds will be same as Day 11. 

 

Day 13. Choibalsan-Ulaanbaatar

Back to Choibalsan town and departure to Ulaanbaatar and shopping. (L, D)

 

Day 14. Departure.
