INTRODUCTION

In 1942, NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF MONGOLIA  was established as a first University in Mongolia, consisting of 7 departments. The BIOLOGY  was one of the oldest departments of the University. Bird collection and scientific database of the Ornithological Laboratory at the National University of Mongolia (NUM) started from first biological expedition, organized by A.G.Bannikov, who was a first head of the Zoology Department in 1943. Since his expedition, several ornithological expeditions and field surveys at the University were initiated and organized by Prof. A.G.Bannikov, Prof. D.Tsevegmid, Prof. A.Dashdorj, Prof. O.Shagdarsuren, A.Bold, M.Stubbe, N.Dawaa, D.Sumiya and members from Moscow State University, Russia, Erkhuu State University, Buryat and Halle-Wittenberg University, Germany all over Mongolia. Collected  bird specimens during ornithological expeditions were used by all generations of students at the University and were kept in Zoological Museum of the University.

In 1980, most bird collections at the Zoological museum were classified by taxonomic groups and few specimens removed to the  Laboratory after newly established. Skin and feather collections, and scientific data of birds at the  Laboratory are the main source of training and research works for undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students. Recent years, six members, including undergraduate, graduate and PhD students of the  Laboratory are intensively working on biology, ecology of raptors, rare bird conservation and migration studies of Mongolian birds with national and International ornithologists. "Education and training" and "Cooperative field survey of birds" for undergraduate, graduate and PhD students of Biological Faculty are the main activities of the Laboratory and Mongolian Ornithological Society. It means that the Ornithological Laboratory of the NUM is the main educational and research center of the Ornithology in Mongolia. Ornithological field works were conducted by members of the Laboratory together with domestic and International governmental and non- governmental organizations such as Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Nature and  Environment, Mongolian Ornithological Foundation, Mongolian State Agriculture University, "Hustai" National Park, Mongolia and National Avian Research Institute, UK, Royal Society for Bird Protection, UK, Oriental Bird Club, UK, Halle-Wittenberg University, Germany, Yamashina Institute for Ornithology, Japan, Wilhelmshaven Avian Research Institute, Germany, Czech Radio, United Nations Development Program, INTERNATIONAL BIRDING & RESEARCH CENTRE IN EILAT, ISRAEL etc...
